What is the difference between life coaching and therapy?

In coaching sessions we don’t work on past traumas. Life coaches are not necessarily trained psychotherapists.

Coaching is a solution based, future focused intervention, to support client achieve their personal or professional goals. Most of these clients are healthy individuals, wanting to bring changes in some areas of their lives, overcome challenges, make important decisions, identifying their core values and principals, etc.

However sometimes during the coaching process therapy might be suggested. For example, if client wants to take a business to another level and decides to create and deliver presentations, but is unable to do so because of fear of public speaking, therapy can be the option to overcome the fear. Or if during the coaching clients decides to give up smoking and feels a need to get professional help, client might opt for a de-addiction sessions.

Life coach can’t help you with depression or anxiety, unless she/he is a trained psychotherapist. In such cases, both coach and the client have to step out from their coaching roles and set up different sessions for therapy purposes.
